David started playing at the age of 7 years, he took lesson and instruction from Hugh Parry who at the time was Musical Director of the Famous Wingates Temperance Band.

He has been very active within the Brass Band Movement for over 58 years and has been conducting for over 40 years. He has experienced of playing and conducting numerous bands in the United Kingdom of all sections, some of which are listed below;

In January 1998, David was approached by, the committee of the British Aerospace (Chadderton) Band. (Championship Section) and became, the bands Musical Director. A position he gladly accepted, taking the band to a winning performance on their second outing.

In 2001, under his direction, Hawk Green (Marple) Band gained promotion to the 1st Section. After coming 3rd in the North West Area Contest at Blackpool.

David is an active experienced adjudicator, both in choral and brass band music. He adjudicated at the 1999 and 2002 C.I.S.W.O. Miners Contest at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, the 2002 Rhyl Music Festival. 

Following serious illness, he became involved in adjudicating again, and is now a Member of Association of Brass Band Adjudicators.

Over the years, he has officiated at numerous events and contests including the Yorkshire Slow Melody and in January 2015, he adjudicated at the Butlins National Brass Band Championships at Skegness and more recently, The Round Table Brighouse March Contest.    He has already received several requests for future Contest and Events.

David always takes Conducting very seriously, his attention to detail shows with the many excellent results he has collected with the numerous band with whom he has had affiliation, be it 4th Section or Championship Section.

 During his 6 years as Musical Director of the Boarshurst Silver Band, he led them to over 20 first places and over 30 podium places. He also gained 5th place at the National Brass Band Championship Finals in Cheltenham in 2011 and won the 3rd Section at the Butlins National Brass Band Championships on consecutive years,  2012 and 2013.

David conducted the Stalybridge Old Band, as their guest Conductor, for the Whit Friday March Contests in June 2014, at which the Band won - 4 First Places and a Second place, plus several Local Prizes.

He joined Stalybridge Old Band on a permanent basis in September 2014, leading them to their first podium place for over 8 years by conducting them to First Place at the Rochdale Contest in the October 2014.

After gaining a 4th place at the North West Area Contest in Blackpool in 2015 he lead them to a 2nd Place at Buxton Contest and at the 2015 Whit Friday March Contests lead the Band to 6 x First Places and 3 x Second Places plus Local prizes and Second Overall in the Tameside Local Brass Bands Championship.

On the 7th June 2015 he directed the Band to First Place and  was awarded The Contests Most Successful Conductor, at the Holme Valley Brass Band Championships.

Following recent major surgery, David has returned to the band and is now back on track for the forthcoming Contest season. Leading the band back to the 3rd Section within the two years he predicted. Now we look forward to pressing onward for further promotions within the next two years.

In October he led the band to 1st place at Rochdale Contest and in November the band won the Own Choice section of the Yorkshire Contest at Holmfirth.

In January 2016, David led the band to a 2nd place at the Butlins National Championships at Skegness.

Since joining the band in 2014 David has won 4 first places, 3 second places and a fourth place in 8 contests, plus 10 first places, four second places and Runners up Overall at Tameside at the Whit Friday Contests, not a bad record really.
